Anthony Fauci, M.D., worked for more than half a century in biomedical research and national public health. Among other roles, he served for 38 years, through seven presidential administration, as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), effectively leading the institute’s fight to prevent, diagnose, and treat many of the greatest challenges to global public health, including HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, tuberculosis, malaria, Zika, and Ebola. In December 2022, he transitioned to academia, where he currently serves as a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Medicine in the division of infectious diseases at Georgetown University and holds an appointment in the McCourt School of Public Policy.
Dr. Fauci played a pivotal role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He made seminal contributions to the understanding of how HIV destroys the immune system and was instrumental in the development of highly effective therapeutic strategies as well as efforts to develop a vaccine for HIV prevention. He spearheaded the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has saved millions of lives in the developing world.
Under his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, NIAID investigators made critical contributions to the development of safe, effective vaccines. Revered for his pursuit of scientific truth, he earned the nation’s trust by disseminating clear, compassionate facts-based information and served with unwavering determination despite an extremely challenging political environment.
Dr. Fauci is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science.
