LGBT Elder Initiative

LGBT older adults face many unique challenges as they age.  The next great challenge for all older adults will be how to successfully age in place.  Government funding, medical reimbursement and the aging services networks are all focusing their future models of care on a system that encourages and supports the concept of “aging in place.”  This workshop will address some of the issues and possible solutions for assuring that LGBT older adults have access to the resources and services that they need in order to achieve this goal.  This program will present an overview of the work being accomplished by the LGBT Elder Initiative; describe the Village movement model; assess the impact of the Affordable Care Act on senior health; and outline how changes to the Older Americans Act can help LGBT older Americans to successfully age in place.
